Coconut rice is a south indian food as main ingredients of grated coconut. It is easiest way of prepared by everyone quickly.  During festival or occasion it is one of favoriate dish in menu list. The aroma and taste of coconut rice comes from the dry red chillies, curry leaves and fresh grated coconut.


The main combination of this rice are mango or lemon pickle, papad or appalam, thuvaiyal, bonda and boiled potato fry will make a complete meal.  Other name of coconut rice as thengai sadam and kobbari annam.


coconut rice is one of the easy way of making with some precooked rice and fresh grated coconut. It really useful for kids lunch box, and also for employeer or bachelors.

Ingredients for coconut rice [1 cup = 250ml]


  • 1cup of boiled rice [ any kind of rice]
  • 1cup grated coconut [ fresh coconut preferable for taste] note: adjust to your taste
  • Salt as per needed.
  • 20 small onion [it good for health as compared to large onion].
  • 2 dry red chillies broken
  •  1 to 2 tbsp of oil
  • ½ tsp of mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp of urad dal
  • ½ tsp of gram dal
  • 10 cahewnuts or peanuts [ optional]
  • 2springs of curry leaves

Instructions for preparing coconut rice:

Preparation of boiled rice :

1. Take a 1cup of rice. Wash the rice twice or thrice to avoid dust particles and soak the rice with water  for 20mins.

2. If you boil the rice in pressure cooker  transfer the soaked rice directly in cooker  for 2 whistle. If cook in a pot  of boiling water then drain the soaked rice completely and add in a boiling water for 3omins. Both methods of rice need to be grainy and not mushy.

3. When the pressure release fluff up the rice with a fork and cool completely  in a separate pan.

Making coconut rice:

1. Heat a kadai or pan add 2tbsp of oil and add ½ tsp of mustard, ½ tsp of urad dal, ½ tsp of gram dal till mustard gets sparkling.



2. On a medium flame Add curry leaves until the leaves turn crisp and 2 dry red chillies to be broken and turns to light black colour.



3. If u need cashew or peanuts for taste add into it and fry till gets golden. It is optional.
4. Add salt as per required.


5. add 20 small onion till gets golden. [note : small onion is good for health and taste.]





6. Add grated coconut mix well till to be fried aromatic and golden.







7. Now Turn off the flame. Immediately Add boiled rice into coconut mixture and mix well in it. Coconut rice is ready.




8. Serve hot coconut rice with papad or  boiled potato fry or thuvaiyal or curry.
